Differential Symbiodiniaceae Association With Coral and Coral-Eroding Sponge in a Bleaching Impacted Marginal Coral Reef Environment

چکیده
Marginal reefs are known for severe stress-inducible perturbations such as high sedimentation, eutrophication, ocean warming, and acidification from anthropogenic climate change. The corals striving in stressful environments develop physiological adaptations induced by differential genomic expressions or association with thermal stress-tolerant algal symbionts (Symbiodiniaceae). Despite adaptations, threatened other space competitors algae sponges. Coral-eroding sponges belonging to the Cliona viridis complex one that also associate Symbiodiniaceae photosymbiont. diversity of associates coral sponge same ecosystems is scarcely known. In present study, community structure Turbinaria mesenterina , a newly described coral-eroding thomasi their surrounding seawater was determined nearshore marginal reef along central west coast India. results revealed significantly higher relative abundance Durusdinium Gerakladium than Symbiodinium Cladocopium seawater. Interestingly, both investigated host species showed sponge. beta analysis Permutational multivariate variance (PERMANOVA) confirmed significant differences profiles between coral. thermotolerant genera different hosts suboptimal conditions. Our field surveys suggested bleaching resistance T. despite fact sea surface temperature reached threshold 31°C during periods years 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. Therefore, tolerance may be attributed respective photosymbiont associations. Furthermore, indicated host-specific selection local environment. Although these observations provide valuable biological insight, more research needed understand tripartite sponge-coral-symbiont together evaluate competitive fitness holobionts.

Oxygen consumption by a coral reef sponge.
Oxygen consumption of the Red Sea coral reef sponge Negombata magnifica was measured using both incubation and steady-state methods. The latter method was found to be the more reliable because sponge activity remained stable over time. Oxygen consumption rate was measured during three levels of sponge activity: full activity, reduced activity and basal activity (starved). It was found that the ...
متن کاملPrediction of Bleaching in Coral Reef Communities Using a Temperature Index(Southern and northern Persian Gulf)
Sea surface temperature is one of the most effective physical parameters that affects the health of coral reefs communities.High frequency of the bleaching phenomenon has extensively occurred in the Persian Gulf in the recent years due to the increase in temperature and increased changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) resulting in great mortality in the coral communities. The aim of this ...
متن کاملApplying Mcsst to Coral Reef Bleaching
In the 1980s and early 1990s, coral reef bleaching events of unprecedented frequency and global extent were observed. Elevated water temperature is suspected as the primary causal stress of mass bleaching events from this period. The relationship between sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and coral bleaching events was investigated using National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Multi...

متن کاملChanges in Biodiversity and Functioning of Reef Fish Assemblages following Coral Bleaching and Coral Loss
Coral reef ecosystems are increasingly subject to severe, large-scale disturbances caused by climate change (e.g., coral bleaching) and other more direct anthropogenic impacts. Many of these disturbances cause coral loss and corresponding changes in habitat structure, which has further important effects on abundance and diversity of coral reef fishes. Declines in the abundance and diversity of ...
